Unexpected combinations have always been a part of my identity, I am a Korean-Filipino-American designer with a Spanish last name. This often leads to a conversation and a mini history lesson but it also fuels my interest in surprising combinations. Have you ever had Fritos on mapo tofu or hot honey on pepperoni pizza?
Unexpected combinations also breathe life into the design process. Laying out all the variables: typography, color, patterns, and images, I’ll question how the mood will change if I juxtapose quiet type to loud colors or a sharp geometric sans serif to hand drawn illustrations? Not every combination works but I value experimentation as it can form new perspectives.
